Vršič Pass, Kranjska Gora

#2 of 15 in Wildlife in Upper Carniola Region
Wildlife Area · Nature / Park
Renamed "Russian Road" in 2006, Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Hike the cobbled road or cycle to the summit while admiring the exceptional vistas of other peaks and slopes. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee or consider staying overnight at one of the five mountain huts along the way and at the top of the pass. The trails are easy to follow, even for children. • The road is fantastic when empty. Great scenery, pure pleasure. During the summer lots of tourist, cyclist so be careful. Slipery when wet. Otherwise fantastic for petrol lovers.  more »
  • The Julian Alps are awe inspiring
  • Legendary review: 1. Awesome drive if the weather is good. 2. 50 hairpin bends with lookout points at many. 3. WC — Little hard to find.
