Renamed "Russian Road" in 2006, Vršič Pass is a high mountain pass that runs through the heart of the Julian Alps. The road was built 1,611 m (5,285 ft) above sea level during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Hike the cobbled road or cycle to the summit while admiring the exceptional vistas of other peaks and slopes. Watch for Ajdovska Deklica, a naturally carved face of a maiden in a rock. Have a cup of coffee or consider staying overnight at one of the five mountain huts along the way and at the top of the pass. The trails are easy to follow, even for children. With our international travel planner, Kranjska Gora attractions like Vršič Pass can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • Nice ride with 50 numbered hairpin turns. Occasional slowdown for ongoing traffic but nothing terrible. Plenty of viewpoints along the way.

  • The road is easy to drive on - wide enough for two cars, good quality road surface, barriers and was quiet in September. Not hair raising at all. Fantastic views. Easy parking at this time of year...

  • If you’re in Slovenia you NEED to hire a car and visit this place! We really wanted to drive down the whole pass but unfortunately due to snow, the road was blocked off; but even this in itself was enough for me to say you need to visit. We ended up hiking up the pass for 2 hours, and even though it was strenuous in our unprepared gear, it was so so good! The views here are truly breathtaking, especially at sunset when the sun is cascading down on the mountainsides. The snow really did add to it, but I’m sure in any conditions this would be an incredible view. Do not miss this!
  • Beautiful place, and to get there you need to drive up step road with with great views and 25 sharp turns. Also great for bikers to make you really tired :-) At the top you can park and walk around. There is also small shop with souvenirs and bar. View from the top is amazing.
