Walk the steep climb or take a funicular to reach Ljubljana Castle on the top of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Old Town. Visible from every corner of the city, the castle was built in the middle of the 15th century and served as a military hospital and arsenal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk over the remains of the fortifications turned into a promenade and join a guided tour, where costumed characters representing different historical periods will take you back to the time of wars, Ottoman invasions, and Habsburg rulers. The castle houses restaurants serving traditional Slovene food, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts, theatre shows and an open-air cinema. Shop for traditional handcraft at the gallery by the entrance. Ljubljana Castle reviews
Amazing sunshine from the tower. Do not expect a lot of attractions, but it’s worth. Castle personal are very kind! Take advantage and go to the best restaurant in Europe. more »
This place gives a really nice view to the city. There's no entrance fee. You can reach either either by a funicular for 2.20€ or by foot, on a short but steep path. Getting to the top of the highest.... more »
Probably the main attraction of Ljubljana, the castle sits on a hill overlooking the city. The easiest way to access the castle is by the funicular, and the cost of the ticket covers all the different museums in the castle, so it's highly recommended to go that route if you prefer a no fuss visit. We visited in December 2019. The castle ground is huge and you can take hours exploring it, with a good view of the surrounding city too. With it being a main attraction, it's always crowded so it's good if you can allocate at least half a day to the place. And start early. Loved the history of it and definitely the #1 attraction in Ljubljana.
This castle doesn't look like much from the outside but it is definitely worth the trip. The best way I could describe it is that the castle is built on top of a cave. Stair leading to the lower levels reveal an art gallery, a jazz lounge (which I'm assuming as amazing accoustics). The view from the castle to the surrounding area is beautiful. I'm sure it's even prettier in the summer. The courtyard would be a beautiful place for a summer wedding. There is a tram you can take up to the castle, which I would definitely recommend. The walk up to the castle is steep and not something I would recommend unless you are looking for a workout.
