Walk the steep climb or take a funicular to reach Ljubljana Castle on the top of the hill, offering panoramic views of the Old Town. Visible from every corner of the city, the castle was built in the middle of the 15th century and served as a military hospital and arsenal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Walk over the remains of the fortifications turned into a promenade and join a guided tour, where costumed characters representing different historical periods will take you back to the time of wars, Ottoman invasions, and Habsburg rulers. The castle houses restaurants serving traditional Slovene food, and hosts art exhibitions, concerts, theatre shows and an open-air cinema. Shop for traditional handcraft at the gallery by the entrance. Make Ljubljana Castle a centerpiece of your Ljubljana vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Ljubljana online route planner.

  • Worth the walk up the hill for views over the city and further mountains. We didn’t pay to go inside as castles don’t interest us but it was nice to walk around and sit enjoying the views for a while

  • Everyone can go in the outside area of the castle without ticket. It has a great view of the town and it is a good point to take pictures.

  • There are much better castle experiences in Europe. Worth a walk up for the view, but to stand in the courtyard made us feel like we were in a shopping mall. Definitely don't pay the €10... you can see enough for free.
  • Absolutely one of the best places you have to check out while in Ljubljana. Took the funicular/elevator up but would recommend to climb. Loved the moss on the wall along the zigzag trail. The castle itself is more than just magnificent. The medieval architecture and craftsmanship along with the modern art display are simply breathtaking. At the top, you would have a panoramic view of the city as well as the Alps which is out of this world. Had my doubts about visiting in Dec but loved the mysterious foggy view. You should get the ticket with the museum access with 9 euro more but it's totally worth it. I was very fascinated by the puppet displays and have to say the characters and styles are quite creative and attention to details. Can't wait to check out other castles in the area.
