Sitting astride the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is marked with picturesque bridges and a marketplace, designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Cathedral of St. Nicholas and Bled Castle. Step out of the city life by going to Vintgar Gorge and Straža Bled. Change things up with these side-trips from Ljubljana: Bled (St. Martin's Parish Church, Ojstrica, &more), Postojna (Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle) and Cross Cave (in Grahovo). Spend the 3rd (Tue) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. Brussels, Belgium to Ljubljana is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a train. When traveling from Brussels in July, plan for somewhat warmer days and about the same nights in Ljubljana: temperatures range from 32°C by day to 17°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Thu) to allow time to drive to Portorož.

Portorož

A resort town on the country's scenic Adriatic coastline, Portoroz offers many spas with all kinds of therapeutic treatments, many based on the brine and mud from the area's salt pans.
Take a break from the city and head to Portorož Beach and Škocjan Caves. Discover out-of-the-way places like St. George's Church and Magical World of Shells Museum. There's much more to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower, kick back and relax at Zusterna Beach, look for all kinds of wild species at Strunjan Nature Reserve, and make a trip to Walls of Piran.

You can drive from Ljubljana to Portorož in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of train and bus. Plan for somewhat warmer nights when traveling from Ljubljana in August since evenings lows in Portorož dip to 20°C. Take a break from the city and head to Kayaking & Canoeing and Kozjak Waterfall. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tolmin Gorge and Virje Waterfall.
