Idrija

Idrija ©
Idrija is a town in Central Slovenia. It is notable for its mercury mine with stores and infrastructure as well as miners' living quarters, and a miners' theatre. Together with the Spanish mine at Almadén, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. The town of Idrija lies in the Idrija Basin, surrounded by the Idrija Hills. It is traversed by the Idrijca River. Mercury was discovered in Idrija in the late 15th century. Mining operations were taken over by the government in 1580. Get to know the history of the oldest mining hub in the country and descend the Anthony Shaft like a real miner and maybe you will run into Perkmandlc, the legendary pit dwarf. Idrija is also the birthplace of a distinct lace-making tradition. The Idrija Lace Festival, which takes place every summer, is a great opportunity to see first hand the weaving of these delicate threads. Hungry? The signature dish of the local cuisine is the "Idrijski žlikrofi" – a delicious type of stuffed dumplings. You can get your fair share of this delicacy at the annual Idrijski Žlikrofi Festival, which takes place every August.
