Ljubljana — 3 nights

Sitting astride the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is marked with picturesque bridges and a marketplace, designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik.Discover out-of-the-way places like Cankarjevo Nabrežje and Wine Tasting Bled. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Old Town Centre of Radovljica and Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Change things up with a short trip to Church of St. Andrew in Bled (about 48 minutes away). There's much more to do: get engrossed in the history at National Museum of Contemporary History, contemplate the waterfront views at Ljubljanica River, ponder the world of politics at Town Hall, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.

Salzburg, Austria to Ljubljana is an approximately 3-hour car ride. You can also take a bus; or take a train. In September, daily temperatures in Ljubljana can reach 23°C, while at night they dip to 11°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 15th (Thu) so you can go by car to Piran.

Considered one of the prettiest cities on the country's coast, Piran owes much of its development to salt.You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at St. George's Church and Socerb Castle. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at First of May Square and Military Museum Tabor. There's much more to do: stroll around Strunjan Nature Reserve, pause for some serene contemplation at Church of St. Bernardine, examine the collection at Koper Regional Museum, and admire the local landmark of Da Ponte Fountain.

Drive from Ljubljana to Piran in 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of train and bus. Traveling from Ljubljana in September, things will get somewhat warmer in Piran: highs are around 28°C and lows about 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 18th (Sun) to allow enough time to drive back home.
