Ljubljana — 3 nights

Sitting astride the Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana is marked with picturesque bridges and a marketplace, designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik.Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Ljubljana Central Market and Ika. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Cathedral of St. Nicholas and Anthony's Shaft Mining Museum. Dedicate the 15th (Tue) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. Valletta, Malta to Ljubljana is an approximately 6.5-hour combination of flight and shuttle. You can also fly; or do a combination of bus and train. Expect little chillier temperatures when traveling from Valletta in August; daily highs in Ljubljana reach 31°C and lows reach 15°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 18th (Fri) to allow time to drive to Piran.
